Guidelines

The academic year which begins in June and ends in May, consists of two terms for B.Com/B. Sc. beginning from July 9, 2010 to October 31 and November 1 to March 31. B A, B. Ph consists of three Trimesters beginning from June 14 / July 1 to August 31 ; September 1 to December 18 and February 14th to May 21.
There are five full class days per week with six hours of class-room lecture/activity daily. Thursdays and Saturdays will be half days/Study days respectively.
Opportunities are provided to the students to take classes, participate in seminars and organise group discussions in order to help them to make a synthesis of Academic studies in keeping with their respective ethical and human contexts.
Periodic assignments and term papers are scheduled during the year in order to lead the students to a personal synthesis and to the acquisition of additional knowledge. The lecturers have an understanding with the Vice-Principals/HoDs in giving the various assignments to the students.
B.A./B.Com./B. Sc. Part I Examinations are held in April-May of the First year, B.A./B.Com.Part II Examinations in April-May of the Second year and B.A.Part III Examinations in April-May of  the Third year. Philosophy Comprehensive Examinations are held in May of the third year.
Whenever possible, specialists and professors are invited from outside for guest lectures, seminars, panel discussions, symposia etc. related to the courses of study offered at SCS/SCSC.
To motivate the students and by way of incentives, the college awards every year, prizes to the students of every class  who pass in all the subjects, score the highest marks in any of the following:
i) Philosophy (B.Ph)
ii) B. A./B.Com./B. Sc. Honours and
iii) B. A./B.Com./B. Sc.  Pass Course, 
iv) COP and Vocational Courses.

Attendence

Every student is obliged to attend all the classes of every prescribed subject. The teacher, at the time of evaluation of any subject, will also take into account attendance at class. Students whose attendance is less than 75% for B.A./ B.Com / B.Sc. are liable to be debarred from the College

Examination Overview

Any absence from regular classes will require a letter from the parent/guardian stating reasons for the inability to attend the class. Long absences (3 days or more) should be substantiated with medical certificate. Persistent absence will incur a fine. Awards/Merit certificates will be given to all who obtain above 90% attendance for both B.Com./B. Sc. & COP.


Any student, who continuously absents from the classes for 15 calendar days without information, will have his/her name struck off from the College register.


The attendance at the first day of class after long vacation/holidays is compulsory and its non compliance shall incur a fine.


An examination will be held in each of the subjects taught, at the completion of the syllabus or at the end of the Semester.


The pass mark for college examinations in all the subjects is 40%.


The college does continuous assessment of the students through regular tests, projects and assignments. The marks secured by the students at these assessments are taken into consideration at the time of sending up the students for University Examinations. The marks secured by the students at these tests are given the following weightage: Semester Tests – 40%, Promotion Examination/Selection Test – 60%. Clearance of Semester Tests is a prerequisite for the Selection Test. An additional fee will be charged for the same.


The students who do not qualify for the University Examination will have to repeat the year. The Examination Committee’s  decision in this regard is final and binding.


Term papers, book reports, class room discussions, and other assignments form a regular part of normal teaching. Evaluation of such work shall carry weight for the final assessment at the examinations. The selection tests for the University exams will be held before or after the winter/Christmas vacation and/or the completion of syllabus.

Eligibility for Admission to B. A. & B.Com. (Honours & General)

  1. As per requirement of the NBU, to be eligible for enrolment at the College, a candidate should have procured the qualifying percentage calculated from the best of four including English and excluding Environment Studies. To be eligible for the Honours Course, a candidate should have obtained either:
    i) 55% marks in the aggregate or
    ii)55% in the aggregate and 60% in the subject of choice at the PUC/Plus Two examination.
  2. In the case of students belonging to SC/ST category, this requirement is relaxed as per prevailing State Rules.
  3. The College will conduct an Aptitude test and hold an interview cum counselling (for subject choice) of the students before they are enrolled in the College.
  4. Before the University examinations (Part I, Part II & Part III) there will be the College level selection examinations. Only the names of those who pass in the College Test examinations (with an aggregate of 40% marks for the Honours Papers and 34.5% marks for each of the Pass subjects) will be forwarded to the University for the University examinations. For the selection of candidates besides the criterion of Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) consisting of 40% marks from the Semester examinations and 60% marks from the selection test, the 75% attendance requirement will be strictly adhered to.
The library is fully computerised and all information regarding the library including searching, reserving, and placing request for picking of books can be done from any of the computers in the campus. For students the same facilities are available from the computer labs, from the library or from their respective departments. The library remains open on all working days from 07.00-12.00 hrs & 12.30 to 16.30 hrs. Thursdays and Saturdays will be half days at Sonada and Siliguri respectively

 

The Library guidelines are as follows :

All the books in the library stack room are available for lending.
It is the responsibility of the borrowers to take care of the books.
Books lost, defaced or damaged in any way shall have to be replaced by the borrowers.
All the books that are taken out of the library must be registered with the attendant.
Books taken from the library on loan should be returned before the expiry of TWO WEEKS. The same book shall not be renewed for loan again.
Failing to return the books on due date, Rs. 5/- per day will be charged as fine.
Unauthorised lifting of books from library will debar further access to the library.
Each borrower is allowed to take TWO books at a time on loan.
The borrowers are requested not to exchange the library books among themselves as a precautionary measure to avoid damage and loss.
The borrower must not bring inside the library any personal book or books which had already been borrowed from the library except for the purpose of returning it.
Books from the reference section (first floor) are not meant for lending.
Current and back issues of periodicals bound and preserved are not given on loan. They are meant for reference only.
The library will be ordinarily open to the staff, both residential and non-residential, and regular students of the College. Restricted membership is allowed for students from the locality studying in other colleges or those doing research.
Silence is to be maintained in the library at all times.

COP Courses

A Student registered for B.A./B.Com./B.Sc. (Honours/General) with the University may opt for any one of the Career Oriented Programmes offered during the year:
Travel & Tourism, Communicative English, Computer Application and Music.

Extension Activities of the College

1. IGNOU Study Centre for BPP, UG & PG  Courses.
2. Vocational Courses (MoRD): The DBTech-MoRD Scheme for empowering the Rural and BPL youth through skill training is activated in the college campus s its extension activity. It is organized by the Don Bosco Educational Society and the infrastructure of the college is made available for the same.  It also aims at social integration of students from diverse backgrounds.
3. Spoken English Course: It is held annually during the vacation after exams to enable local students become proficient in the language and seek admission from vernacular medium to English Medium Institutions.
4. Salesian Social Science Research Centre: It is a centre to help reach out to the locality with community welfare related information and generate information from the locality/region and supply the same to the local and state level administration for policy making and timely interventions for people’s welfare.

The campus is open for collaborative activities of academic nature for the students of the locality.
7. AICUF: The All India Catholic University Students’ Federation active in all prominent catholic colleges across the country has an active unit in the college since 2008. It is coordinated by Fr Francis Gomes sdb and the students participate in and help organize training camps providing rural exposure and social awareness.
